Start with the vehicle, not the trailer. Confirm vehicle dimensions and weight, then match those numbers to the trailer deck, load rating and tow vehicle limits.
1. Separate GVWR from payload
A trailer’s GVWR is its maximum rated loaded weight. Payload is not the same number: usable payload depends on the trailer’s own empty weight and any accessories carried on it.
2. Check the tow vehicle
The tow vehicle, receiver, ball mount, hitch ball and wiring all need to be appropriate for the loaded trailer. The vehicle manufacturer’s towing information is the starting point.
3. Think about loading geometry
Low cars, long overhangs and wide tires can change whether a vehicle can load without scraping or contacting fenders. Ask before pickup if clearance is tight.
4. Plan the securement
Use rated securement equipment and follow the trailer/rental instructions. Re-check straps after the first part of the trip and during longer drives.
